Mount St. Mary's University

Mount St. Mary's University is a private, liberal arts Catholic university located in the Catoctin Mountains. Its four-year curriculum prepares students for success, while giving them a solid grounding in the Catholic intellectual tradition. Education at the Mount is in the service of truth, in cultivating a community of leaders who are grounded in faith, engaged in discovery, and empowered by leadership.

Mount St. Mary's University was named one of the 25 best universities in the region by U.S. News and World Report and a top ten Catholic school by First Things' Survey of America’s Colleges and Universities. The Mount is also the only college in the state to be included in the selective list of Catholic Colleges of Distinction, a list of schools that are recognized for innovative learning experiences, an active campus, personal development opportunities, and outstanding preparation for the workforce. Students at Mount St. Mary’s are expected to become well-rounded citizens and to seek leadership roles, whether through their academic, athletic, or community endeavors.

1,600 undergraduate and 500 graduate students pursue their degrees at the Mount, which offers
40+ majors, minors, concentrations, interdisciplinary and special programs, as well as the option to create our own interdisciplinary major. The university’s graduate programs encompass business, education, and philosophy.


Mount St. Mary's main campus is located on 1,400 tree-lined acres in Emmitsburg, Maryland, while its second campus is in the bustling city of Frederick. The more rural Emmitsburg campus includes residence halls, academic centers, a fine arts center, science center, a Division 1 athletic facility, a student center, as well as the National Shrine Grotto of Lourdes, which draws many worshipers and tourists. The Mount's Frederick campus is home to the adult undergraduate classes, graduate classes, and the Frederick Conference Center.

Many students are actively engaged in the school’s 70 clubs as well as student government. There are also fun activities such as a crab feast and Christmas Dance, throughout the year. Student athletes at Mount St. Mary’s compete in NCAA Division I sports, including men's baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, and track & field, and women's basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming/diving, tennis, and track & field.
